Basement flood prevention

Many of us were personally affected by flood damage to our basements, causing us to lose furniture, family heirlooms and other keepsakes.
Great floods and unexpected water levels will always be a concern for homeowners, especially those with basements, as there is only so much we can do once Mother Nature has set her course. However, your basement should not be leaking and wet every time it rains. If this is a problem that you are experiencing, there are things that you can do to protect your underground man cave, gym, theater or storage area.
Taking the right precautions can save you money, time and headaches in the future, and it may even help protect against large, unforeseen natural disasters.

Foundation leak

Cracks in concrete foundation walls are a major problem in America. But what makes already cast concrete foundation to crack? This process starts immediately after the casting of the concrete and generally continues until the third year. The soil underneath is still movable and it lends itself. Concrete cracking starts from the base, and in almost all cases up to the top of the foundation wall. Once cracked, the wall is an open door for moisture, leaks, mold and unpleasant odors in the basement, and a favorite place for different insects.

Foundation waterproofing

In the old days, the go-to foundation waterproofing was an asphalt-based, black, nasty goo. That material is a byproduct of oil refining and is actually not considered “waterproofing” but only “dampproofing.” Asphalt goo can’t block bulk water that builds up against a foundation; it can only prevent the moisture from damp soil from seeping into concrete. As soon as that moisture accumulates and saturates the soil, it builds hydrostatic pressure that can drive the water right through asphalt dampproofing. Effective foundation waterproofing is more than just one product; it’s a system with three critical components: a membrane to protect the concrete; a drainage mat to relieve hydrostatic pressure and allow water to drain down, instead of in; and a French drain at the footing level to carry water to a daylight drain or to a sump pump.
